Caroline Porter
Physical Therapist
"A patient once told me I was encouraging, and that's stayed with me ever since."
Caroline has been in rehab for two years.
A moment that reminded her why she does this work
One moment that reminded Caroline why she became a physical therapist was working with a patient who had a hard time communicating. She found a simple, personal way to connect with them during a balance exercise, and it turned into one of the most rewarding sessions of her career. The patient finished with a huge smile and told her she was encouraging, and it's stuck with her ever since.
A win from this year
One of Caroline's biggest wins was helping a patient regain the ability to walk after a major medical setback. When they first started, everyday activities required significant assistance. Through consistent therapy and treatment adapted to their needs, they gradually regained strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. "Seeing them eventually walk and return to doing things on their own was incredibly rewarding."
What people outside the field don't understand
"It's not just exercises or treating an injury. We're constantly assessing movement, adapting treatment to each person, educating patients, and helping them build confidence within themselves. A big part of physical therapy is also building relationships and supporting people through what can sometimes be a frustrating, long, or difficult recovery."
What Caroline would want for her own family
"I would want them to feel safe, respected, heard, and cared for as a person, not just a patient. I would want the care team to treat them with compassion and dignity, not just focus on their medical needs or injuries."
