Program Manager, Silver Birch of Michigan City

"Hearing that a patient got to spend real, pain-free time with family over the weekend is why this work matters."

Jessica has eight years of experience in rehab.

A moment that reminded her why she does this work

Jessica recently started working with a patient managing chronic pain. Early into treatment, the patient came into the therapy gym practically in tears because she'd spent the whole weekend pain-free and was able to spend meaningful time with family.

A win from this year

Jessica helped a patient get properly fitted seating equipment after years of relying on something uncomfortable and unsafe at home. Jessica also helped make the patient's living space more comfortable and functional. "With the new equipment the patient is able to relax more comfortably, decreasing her low back and leg pain."

What people outside the field don't understand

"Therapy is more than just exercise. Sometimes taking the time out of your day to listen to a resident and better understand what they may be going through can be just as beneficial. It can help build trust with that resident, making them more willing to participate in therapy sessions."

What Jessica would want for her own family

"I'd want them to feel safe and respected by their care team. I'd want them to be treated as a person and not just a diagnosis. I'd want their care team to advocate for them while keeping clear communication with the patient and family."
