CMS Temporarily Freezes Nursing Home Care Compare
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced a temporary suspension of updates to its Nursing Home Care Compare platform, including star ratings and performance data. The monthly update pause begins with July data is expected to remain in effect until late October, coinciding with the next scheduled quarterly release.
This decision is linked to CMS’s ongoing transition to iQIES, a platform designed to modernize data collection and reporting. By delaying public updates during this migration, CMS aims to maintain the accuracy and consistency of information available to consumers, providers, and regulators.
While Care Compare data will remain frozen during this period, nursing facilities are still required to comply with transparency rules. Operators must continue to post their most recent survey results in a visible location within each community. In addition, inspection findings and compliance records will continue to be accessible to the public upon request.
CMS has stated that regular updates to Care Compare will resume with the quarterly data refresh scheduled for October 29, 2025. The agency underscored that this pause is a precautionary measure to ensure data integrity rather than a reflection of any concerns with provider reporting.
This temporary freeze highlights the importance of CMS’s broader efforts to improve data systems while maintaining public trust in the transparency of nursing home performance information.
